Pat Kilroy - Technician
“As a Network Technician, my job is to repair faults and keep the lines clear. The best thing about it, for me, is the variety. I’m out and about all the time meeting different people, which is great for your confidence. I suppose the worst thing is the weather! Going up and down telephone poles in the rain isn’t fun – but it’s all part of the job and not something that keeps me up at night.
Over the years, I’ve had many different roles at eir. I originally joined as an apprentice in 1983 because I was looking for long-term career prospects. Since then, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to move within the company and gain experience. I’ve worked as a manager, running a team and built up a lot of knowledge. I’ll soon be moving to a new role in the Plan Design team, which means I’ll be planning the network.
All in all, I’m really happy here. I have a certain amount of freedom, I’m outside all the time – which is a great feeling – and I’ve been well trained in all the different aspects of the job. I think eir’s a good employer. You feel part of a decent organisation that’s well structured and supportive.”
